New Lens

So yesterday was my birthday, and my awesome brother gave me a new lens for my camera. Its a 50, and it is so cool! Here are some photos I took with it!

The lens takes great close-ups, and creates really cool boca! I'm so excited and grateful!

These are the lastest photo I have taken for my classes this year so far. These first ones are from my advanced visual media class. We were suppose to make a collage of self portraits... so this is what I came up with! What do you think?

These next ones are from my photo journalism class. We were suppose to take creative photos of people working. This is what I came up with!! It is a fun class... plus I'm hoping to learn more about my camera!

Camera Raw: Black and White

This photo I am about to share, I cannot take the credit for taking it, but I did however edit it. My sister took it with my camera(she has the same camera though) and I must say she did a great job! This is of her little girl. Now I know that I just did a photo of her in the last post, but she is just so cute I could help but post another!

To achieve this look of the photo, I used camera raw's adjustment brush. I set the brush to 100% density and turned the exposure down a bit. Then to get the pink hat back, but lighter in color, I used the same brush, only I turned the density down to 80% and painted the it back.

So I have decided to still update this blog, and try out new projects to post. For this post, I took some photos of my niece in the pool. Then I edited in Camera Raw because the shadow on her face was too dark. I will show you the before and after!

Wow scanners are not an easy feat. At first my dad gave me a scanner, but little did I know that it was it too old for my computer, and I couldn't find a driver for it. So I had to try another scanner. So I used my roommates scanner, and I could get it to work either. I ended up staying up till 2:30 in the morning fighting with it. Still nothing! So then I went home the next day, and used my mom and dad's printer. At first it gave me problems too, but once I figured out what program to use, I had plenty of success! Then I realized how fun it was. The scan is of a juicer. It is probably my favorite object. I also scanned a lei, and a cool pasta tool with a pink paper background for the plain scan. I only edited the juicer, but cutting out the background and replacing it with black.

The edit I did is a combination of marbles, bugs, and lights. My goals was to put simple and small objects together, to make a cool design. I achieved this by cutting out the background and replaced it with a truer black. I then used the rotate tool to change all the shapes around! I think it turned out kind of cool! Who knew those shapes could make a cool design.

This project is beautiful and kind of simple! I remember I used to use this same method with text when I was much younger, but had forgotten how to do it. It still amazes me everyday how smart photoshop really is! The first one I added yellow to the background, text to the bottom, and then flattened the whole project and added a vignette. But I was really found of that, so I removed it. To make the text look more interesting I added a drop shadow and embossed it. The second project, I did the same things except I made the text blue, didn't add a drop shadow, and made the boxes a little slimmer. I really like the photos, and I am glad I got to use them in such a creative way. The template gives them much more justice!

This was a challenging project, yet fun! The hardest part for me was trying to be creative, and not copy someone online. The first photo it started with the one shadow just holding the banana, and then it turned into fighting over the banana! I thought I turned out pretty cool. To take this photo I had to wait for the right time of day so that the shadows wouldn't be too short, or tall. Then I had my subjects stand so that it looked like they were fighting over the banana. The hard part was trying to make it look interesting and not getting my own shadow in the photo. I just used a point and shoot for this photo. The next photo I wanted the girl in front to look like a giant pushing the little girls in dresses. I should probably call it Jane and the bean stock. :) I didn't add any edits to the photo, but I did use a flash to make the foreground brighter. My edited photo was really fun! I had tried and tried to figure out what I wanted to do. First I wanted to put someone on a building, and then I just didn't know how to get the right photo. So late that night is suddenly came to me to do the devil and the angel on my subjects shoulder. The lighting is my best, but it was fun to cut out the other photos and try and make it look believable. To cut them out I used the quick selection tool, and the black shirt was easier then the white shirt because of the contrast!

Borders are an amazing option. They can add a new life to a photo. In these photos, I tried to empathize that fact. The first photo I used a border that I had experimented with last year and made it bigger. The border was made out of a black rectangle with the inside erased with an edgy brush. On the photo I changed the opacity of the border to help it blend better to the photo. The next photo I used the history brush. First I deleted the picture, and then used a jagged brush to bring it back, only where I wanted it. Then used a spotty brush on the edges to add more photo to the finished product. Then on the bottom I used the crop to tool to add space so I could add words. The last photo is probably my favorite! I did it by copying the layer and then deleting the top photo's middle with the rectangular marquee tool. Before I cut it out though, I used the stoke tool to add the red line around the rectangular marquee tool was... notice it is close to the same color as her shoes because I used the eye dropper tool.

Light painting is something I have never done before this, but I soon realized how fun it is. For these photos I had the chance to use my roommates help. The first photo was done with a dull flash light. My roommate used the flashlight to draw her name on the wall very slow. I used Shutter priority of 16seconds. The next photo is of me and two of my roommates dancing with glow sticks on our wrists and necks. This photo was the Shutter priority of 16 seconds also. The next photo is me walking by a passing car. I think it really looks like the stars are falling or something. This photo was 4 seconds. The last two photos are the same, except that I turned the camera a few degrees. Also the first one is 16 seconds, and the second is 5 seconds. I thought the lines were nice with the multiple colors. In the photos there were several cars and motorcycles passing by.

So I was trying really hard to be creative and make my own, but I guess my creative genius must have not been working, because I couldn't think of anything. So I just used one of the examples and recolored it. First I changed the color of the background by putting a pink 50% opacity layer over the sample background. Then I changed the font and the date. After that I put the pictures in, and then put the days of the week on the photos.
To put the photos on I clicked on the brown part and then fit it to the square. A few of the pictures I had to crop it in a another doc to make them fit the frame.
But one time when I am feeling more creative, I will for sure try out making my own!

This was a fun project! I enjoyed have the chance to try and get different types of shots. The first picture I wanted to try and get a picture in my room, so I stood in the middle and looked around. The thing that stuck out to me most was my necklaces hanging on the wall, so I tried to get a cool angle on one. Also I wanted to focus only on one, but still see the others in the back. The next photo called Keys was in the Spori while I was doing some very stressful homework, I decided to take a break and get my pictures. The piano stuck out to me so I decided to get it as my subject. I used the macro button so that I could make the dept swallow. Then I added a exposure adjustment to give it a cool look. Night picture was taken over at the cute businesses by the car dealership and the middle school. The buildings over there have a really cute look to them. The only problem is that I really had my flash, and I have not invested in a tripod... so I had to hold the camera firmly on the ground to make it not blurry. View- My niece and nephew were at my apartment while my sister and I were hanging out. They were looking out the window, and it looked so cute that I thought I'd snap their picture. This is through my front window screen, while she was eating some crackers which explains her expression :). In friends, my roommate were walking to ward prayer. Since ward prayer is very much apart of sunday and it was raining, I thought it was the perfect picture to represent the day. This picture was the most labor intensive because I had to change the middle sweater by cutting it out and then replaced its color from brown to green. Then I desaturated it and masked out the other jackets. After that there were some light spots all over the picture, so I used the healing tool on those. Sarah- I decided that I wanted to do a photo shoot with my pretty friend Sarah, so we went to the Gardens while it wasn't raining and just took some random photos. I like this one because of the reflection in the water that looks neat! The last is Devo. I really wanted to get a picture of devotional because it is such a huge part of my life! This semester I have the opportunity to be the devotional ushering director, so in this picture I wanted to get the hustle and bustle that happens 5 minutes before devotional starts!

On the first picture I wanted to get my niece but still focus on the flower so that the contrast was really good. Then I used the adjustments to change the flower color from yellow to orange. I was really trying to pick a realistic color to replace with. The second edit I wanted to draw out her eyes and make them look really blue so I adjusted the curves and levels and masked out her eyes so the color stuck out. Then I added a vinette and smoothed out her little 3 year old scratches with the healing brush. The last set I wanted to light up the color, it was getting later in the day and so they were looking a little dark. Also I focused the camera on the wrong focus point. So I used the adjustment feature thingy to match the color to the last picture!!

Portraits are a new thing for me, it is something I haven't had much practice with. But I decided to try and do the best I could. The first picture is of my youngest niece and my sister (her mom). She is about 5 months old and so cute. I wanted to get a picture that focuses on her eyes. To edit the picture, I added a small vinette, and warmed up the picture. The next couple of pictures I just wanted to capture them being happy and enjoying life. They were taken in Island Park while we were enjoying the weekend as a family. The Big T one I didn't edit but I consider it an environmental picture because that little boy(my nephew) has been riding on the four-wheeler for most of his life, and he loves it. The one called Melissa was edited by changing the levels, the contrast, and a photo filter to warm it up. Also I added my favorite... a vinette. The Happy girl picture, I was really trying the fix the poor quailty of the light and make her eye color better. So to edit it I fixed the curve, the levels, exposure, brightness, and exposure. Also I added a photo filter to warm it up. The last picture, I wanted to get a group shot. The only thing I did to edit it was desaturate it to get the lighting to look better, and add pops of color!!

This was my very first time with HDR, and I think it ended up pretty cool! I'm not use what adjustments I made, except that I used the mysterious light in red, and up the vibrancy in the rust!

For this one I just used the overlay tool to combine the two pictures together. Then I masked out a little bit of it. Also I added a vinette, and adjusted the exposure. I think it ended up looking pretty cool!

I think that this type of picture taking is one of my favorites, and to tell you the truth I have been playing the back and forth focus game for a couple of years now. It cool to see that by just changing what your camera is pointing at. As for editing, I did alot of the typical stuff to them: I added a vinette, adjusted the exposure, and adjusted the vibrance. I really like both my photo-sets in a different way, but there is something I like about peeping through the door in the old school!

I didn't do much to these pictures except the 2nd one. I pretty much added all the adjustments to it, to make it less dark. It was fun to learn how to use the camera to make a "ghost" pictures, it was amazing that just changing the settings can make such a cool picture. At first I couldn't get a good one of anybody else, so I used my timer, and ended up getting one of myself!

I've never been very good at portraits, but it was fun to try! I think the best part of taking them, is editing them. I've added vibrancy to most of them, some of them exposure, and pretty much all of them have a vinette! I even tried some desaturation! Laura's sweater was perfect for using as an accent color. All in all, it was a fun to try out!

Edit-
In Raw I did alot to the Photo! I adjusted the temperature to make it warmer. Then I added quite a bit of a vignette, and added some fill light. Then I played up the black and exposure to play up the darks and shadow. Then I upped the clarity quite a bit, and played with the vibrance. Last used the curve custom feature to light up the photo.

I just really wanted to play the picture up the best I could. Raw is really cool because it makes playing with it much easier, and it is extremely easy to change it back. The only problem I had was trying to post the original photo, so if it is the wrong size I apologize! I couldn't get it to size down with out going back to the edited one!

This was a hard project for me!! I wasn't sure what was worth taking a panoramic picture of! I drove all over Rexburg trying to find something pretty! I finally gave up, because I couldn't find the place I was looking for. Anyway I was pretty disappointed, but then I decided to try the pictures I did take, and they didn't turn out too bad! The editing I did on them was: I really upped the vibrancy,
and the exposure! Then I added a Vignette! It was amazing to see how the pictures really come together, I really have a appreciation for photoshop!

Not a Huge change. But I used the level adjustment make the water and bridge lighter, and then masked the sky so that I could keep the beautiful sunset. Also I added a photo filter to bring out the blue in the water, and the orange in the sky. Last I used the vibrance adjustment to the sky.
I learned that adjustment layers are great because if you don't like it anymore you can just send it to the trash, and it doesn't affect your photo. I also learned on this photo about centering your camera on where you want the focus. I pointed my camera at the sunset instead of on the water, which made the bridge dark. But editing the darker part was easier than trying to get the color back! I just think that Idaho is so pretty, and spring nights rock!

After adjusting the curves and levels, I used the Poster edges as a smart filter. Then to make the masking easier I used the quick selection tool on the flower bunch so that the masking would only draw on the selected part. Then I used the vingette filter to lighten the edges. The flowers are just in my neighbors yard in Idaho Falls, but I really like the sun shining behind the flowers.

Sorry there are so many pictures, but this was a really fun project for me! During this project I learned a lot about lighting, and how to use it to your best advantage. Also I learned how to edit my pictures better. I keep seeing people use vignette, but I had no idea how to use it. So in order to figure it out I looked up a tutorial on google, and realized how easy it is and how cool your pictures look afterward.

I found out how hard it is to make a cat hold still, especially when your camera keeps shining a red light in his face. Also I found out that birds are extremely smart, and know when you are trying to take their picture. I had a close encounter with a red-winged black bird, that kept switching sides with me at the canal. I was not however able to take his picture, which was sad because they are a really pretty bird!
I never realized how cool photography can be, especially when a little editing can make it look even better! It really helped me to appreciate what a beautiful place I grew up in... Good old Idaho Falls!!

Blends & Type

This was a fun project! I never thought of taking pictures of textures before, so I felt pretty weird taking pictures of dirt and carpet. I sure I got some weird looks too. Also I gained a love for the overlay feature. Anyway the first one I did just an overlay, and then I did a mask and softened some of the carpet with the black paint. Also i did a black paint border and then overlaid it and changed the opacity. The picture of the Spori arch was fun to take.
The Second one, I'm not sure how I feel about the word, but my biggest goal was at least to play with words on the photo. The photo is of the tree in front of the snow building. I was playing with focus on this picture. I did another black border, and faded the opacity, and gave it a color overlay to green. With the text, I sandwiched it between the background, and a copy of the back ground. Then I merged the top layer to the text and then beveled and embossed it.

Color Study: White

I decided on white, but I had a hard time deciding on just 4, so I picked 6. This project was a blast because it gave me the chance to look around my world. It was fun to try and find the most obvious, and the not so obvious examples of white. My favorite thing was trying different angles, and focuses. Also what white project would be complete without the Temple. When I was taking the pictures of the Temple, it was so windy that I had to plant my feet firmly so my picture wouldn't come out blurry. I didn't edit any of my photos, I just tried the best I could to get my color across. I hope you enjoy!

So these are my Past photos! The oldest is from 2006, and the newest are from 2009. I guess I don't take pictures as much as I use to :). I tried to pick different types, such as close ups, photoshopped, and nature. I'm not really sure what else to say, except I'm excited to get better at taking photos.

I really like using different angles, so for this one I'm laying on my stomach on the higher platform of grass, while everyone else is down on the lower level.

Jenni: 6-27-09; 10am; Yellowstone; f/4.8; 1/500; Kodak V530; I used the zoom technique. When I took this picture I was also in Brother Wyeth's class. He showed us Sister Esplin's waterfall example and about using the zoom to make the backdrop seem closer, so I thought I'd try it out. In reality the waterfall was much further away. Besides the zoom, I didn't do much else, no photoshop was used in any!

One pink rose: 3-28-06; 10am; Idaho falls (my backyard); f/2.8; 1/580; Nikon E4300; I took this one in highschool, when I was really into photoshop. These are roses I got from prom. I'm not sure exactly what I did, but I'm guessing that I cut out the pink rose and the stem, and put in on the top layer. Then I desaturated all of the background. The color of the rose is the actual color. Also I'm pretty sure I used the macro button on the camera.

let there be light: 4-1-09; 11pm; BYU-Idaho Stadium; f/2.8; 1/8; Cannon Powershot SD790 IS; The only thing I did to This photo was straighten it, from where I was standing on the bleachers was a little crooked. I took this one really late at night, before they turned off the track lights. Then I had my friend stand in the middle of the field. I think it turned out neat, probably not one of my very best, but one of the coolest! I really like the blinding light, and the detail of the chairs. Also I like that it was at night. I don't remember if I used my flash or not.
